Whereas those three hipster-attracting exclamation marks promise surprise, wonderment and ecstasy, actually listening to ‘Heart Of Hearts’, the Brooklyn five-piece’s anticipated comeback, offers little in the way of such !!!-worthy emotions. Instead there’s a familiarity to the sound (swelling drums, clattering cowbells, and rubber-band taut rhythms are still very much the order of the say), and a wholesome respect for !!!’s impeccable sense of structure and post-punk conventions. But !!! shouldn’t be a band to chin-stroke and pontificate over: they’re telling us to party and all we can think about is how brilliant and inventive the last Rapture album was, or wondering exactly how many Saturday nights ‘Myths Of The Near Future’ is likely to soundtrack this year.
