Everyone's favourite surgically-masked Liverpudlian weirdoes return with this, a remarkably straight down the line number for a group that made their name through undermining traditional pop conventions with abstract art-rock records like 'Walking With Thee' and 'Winchester Cathedral'.
'If You Could Read Your Mind' should be hailed as amongst their best work, combining the group's traditionally indistinguishable lyrics with a pounding melody, all backed by a ferocious wall of sound that threatens to overwhelm the listener. If it wasn't so damn tuneful, it'd be unlistenable, but after four albums Clinic have honed their skills considerably, and this is an excellent reminder of how good 'Visitations', the album this is lifted from, really is. Luckily, the band haven't completely forgotten their art-school roots - the video to this track bears more than a passing resemblance to infamous 1920's experimental film 'Un Chien Andalou'.
