Ray LaMontagne is a man who likes to keep things simple with acoustic country guitars that build to a rousing chorus. It will no doubt repeat the commercial success of ‘Trouble’, but it lacks some of the charm. While covering a gentle antipoverty message, it sounds a bit to contrived to be truly touching. His influences are clear with heroes like Bob Dylan and Otis Redding, but he ends up sounding more like Counting Crows. His voice is as strong as ever, but is lost under the need for chart hits over substance.
