Leeds' finest Duels showcase songs from their new album on ‘Once In The Night’. The title track is an agitated blend of orchestral splendour, that’s is spoilt by trying to sound too much like The Killers. ‘Half Wrong/Half Right’ combines echoing off-key vocals with Bright Eyes style acoustic rhythms. It takes a couple of listens for it’s tender qualities to shine through. Sounding like David Bowie filtered through a megaphone ‘I, Mosquito’ is quirkily brilliant, with a catchy chorus. Mixing fragile acoustic guitars with spiking electronic noise ‘Sisters’ is as different again.
Duels are a band that can’t be pinned down to one sound and sound all the better for it.
