So a young girl who used to be an actress has become a singer….mmmmm. She is wearing abundant black eyeliner and corsets. Words are being bandied about such as "Goth revival" and "punk pop". Alarm bells are ringing. Thankfully, 'God This Hurts' doesn't even attempt to stray into these sacred territories; instead it is gloriously American teen angst pop of the highest order. With thumping guitars a’la Fall Out Boy and sweet vocals from the 19 year old Betty, it succeeds in trouncing Avril Lavigne and her nasty little baggy pants. The lyrics are so wonderfully depressing it should appeal to any teenager in their ‘gothic’ phase crying into their pillow. It really should hurt, but it doesn’t.
