Whilst Smog (aka Bill Callaghan) remains an acquired and largely obscure taste, this collection of four songs (two from his new, critically acclaimed album, ‘A River Ain’t Too Much To Love’) effortlessly shows off why he is regarded as one of alt-country’s key influences. Lead track 'Rock Bottom Riser' in particular is mesmerising. Packed with rich imagery, the song is simple, yet completely compelling, and has an equally hypnotic animated video accompanying it. Only Leonard Cohen comes to mind in comparison. The second album track, 'I Feel Like The Mother Of The World', loosens the emotional gauge and sounds ecstatically upbeat in comparison. With a video featuring a Hollywood actress (Chloe Sevigny, albeit beefing her eyes out), it could help the mist clear around Smog's undoubtedly unique talents.
