Winners of the Glastonbury unsigned competition in 2005 (a privilege previously bestowed on The Subways and Blackbud) it’s been a long time coming for The Deadbeats to launch their assault on the public’s psyche. Thankfully their great debut single, ‘Backdoor Honey’, is finally here. Despite the somewhat debased connotations of the title (ahem), it’s an upbeat, country-rock tinged foot-stomper and truly perfect for the summer months ahead. Admittedly, it’s doesn’t quite capture the visceral exuberance of their live shows, but the riotous pace, frontman Sam Hammond’s Kings of Leon–esque, weathered vocals and piano loops make it a damn fine listen. The more restrained ‘Cat Got The Cream’ with its lilting harmonies and highly Americanised lines “She’ll be giving you a heart attack, she’ll be riding in your Cadillac”, is a tad less impressive, but still decent enough.
