Calexico would seem a ‘shy’ band, always beavering away somewhere in the background. Not being big obviously doesn’t bother them though, because this is the sound of a band still in clearly in love with making music. ‘Bisbee Blue’ is a gentle, jauntily twanged country lilt and its sense of beautiful calm and gorgeous tune is of the kind that makes the whole world suddenly seem a sunnier place for the listener. Aghast at the scary modern, singer Joey Burns sings of “new cities keep on sprawling, old towns fall in two.” However he shrugs a shoulder, and finds solace in “Bisbee blue”.” Bisbee apparently being a town in Arizona. Fantastic, like a ‘Waterloo Sunset’ for the vast dusty highways of Middle America.
