A hot tip for great things by many, Loughborough lads The Voom Blooms prove that they are worthy of such plaudits with their debut single ‘Cigarettes and Politics.’ Starting off with two whirling guitar lines, rhythmic drums and George Guildford’s increasingly urgent vocals (with some heavy lyrics, man) soon add some tension before the soaring finale hits home. True, it’s a tad formulaic, building on the quiet-loud-quiet modus operandi, and the big guitars hooks are the spit of those utilised so well by the likes of Editors - but these boys have plenty of vitality and spirit to set them apart. Flipside ‘Thoughts of Rena’ is pretty darn good too. Blooming great.
