Doloroso? Terrible name for a band. Despite that ‘Killer Calm’ is an impressively moody slice of pop noir. The killer here is the looped keyboard riff which is the key to the brooding slice of atmosphere built. Singer Chris Wilde has a commercial sounding deep croon and does pretty well in creating a dark sexy atmosphere as he obliquely describes some cold eyed femme fatale who leaves him “always thinking in slow motion” and is involved with some kind of er ‘killer calm’ which is “like a chemical mixed in with the water.” Sounds like a one off rather than serving notice of a major new band but it’ll be seasonal treat for those of a certain disposition.
