As a live band Soulwax have failed to match the success of their 2manydjs project. However, not ones to be phased by this minor set back, the Dewaele brothers have chosen to capitalise on the tracks from recent album 'Any Minute Now' by going the way of many an 80’s band and reinventing their songs to maximise their floor filling potential.
Nite Versions is a proto live experience, if you will, in which live drums, guitar and vocals are fused with laptop generated samples and synth sounds. Versions of album favourites 'NY Excuse' and 'E Talking' were strategically placed into the seamless set to prevent it wandering off into electronic obscurity. It’s a live show not to be sniffed at, seeing as there is so much going on at once, what’s more clever, however, is the fact that Soulwax have managed to drum up support for their live show from the Fabric-going pilled up masses who previous would only have known the Dewaele’s under their 2manydjs moniker. It probably won’t win the boys any more indie kid devotees, but that’s not the purpose of this bizarre show.
The queue outside goes on for miles, even though the club seems packed to its rafters. 2manydjs are due to take the stage at 3.30am, a clever idea that allows the Dewaele’s to play under both guises to a captive market who simply can’t move from their spot on the sweaty dancefloor even if they wanted to. Clever, the only word that describes every idea these Belgian brothers have ever had and it doesn’t look like they will be running out of them soon.
