Did anyone else wince when they found out that the newest, hottest band on the scene ever (Be Your Own Pet, obviously) had an average age of sixteen? It gets you just 'there' doesn’t it? There being the place in your brain where envy clashes with despair at being…well not 16 anymore. Young bands are making marketing execs get very hot under the collar at the moment and we think we may well have just found another one to whet their appetite; let us introduce you to Pink Riot….
Yes they are still in sixth form but they have clearly been studying hard at their post-punk composition as tonight their repertoire is reminiscent of a more keyboard led Ikara Colt. The band's enigmatic lead singer steals the show with his angular guitar riffs and inane shouts, which perfectly suits his kohl-rimmed eyes and Manics fan attire. In the meantime Korg operator general Josh tries his hardest not to look nervous whilst all his equipment fails around him…oh and there is a drummer too who looks simply ace in his NHS glasses - a young Dev Test-Icicles methinks.
Pink Riot play a fifteen-minute set and spend at least three of those precious minutes fixing a bass drum pedal, despite this they still manage to impress. Their tunes are insanely paced and wouldn’t sound out of place at a trendy warehouse party somewhere in Dalston. They're young and very nervous but that won't last, especially after they have been groomed by an aforementioned exec. Lacking somewhat in melodies, the band need to concentrate on getting themselves a set with songs that you can distinguish from each clearly and maintain a better presence onstage. So no…not quite there yet but oh so close, A+ for effort, see me in 6 months and you might even get a gold star.
