In ripped jeans and dark red top, Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall opens her set with the brilliant ‘Another Place To Fall’, which excites the audience so much she feels compelled to say “that’s one song and you’ve already won the noise prize!”
Regular interaction with the crowd and relating her songs to stories pleasantly makes this sold out gig feel much more intimate than it should be. KT’s tall tales include one about Ed from the Chemical Brothers (“the tall one with the greasy hair”) who’d told her he’d bought “one of these pedal things and I don’t know how to use it” hilariously ends with the smug punchline “keep your ears open, this is how it works”.
Homage is paid to The Eurhythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’ as the drums kick in during ‘Heal Over’, proving KT is more than a one some Dido wannabe. Her strong, gravily voice clearly carries across the hall succeeding in making her debut hit ‘Black Horse And The Cherry Tree’ enjoyable to Gigwise for the first time. Yet it’s KT’s recent top 20 hit ‘Other Side Of The World’ being played to death on the radio which has surely won over most of her fans to date and is even more fantastic live!
‘Suddenly I See’ (please let this be her next single!) is a mega highlight – it even includes the banging of a tambourine against a dustbin lid! Not to mention scatting; all against a backdrop of twinkly lights, woohoo! What had begun as a chilled out singalong is now a jazz party! You shouldn't have to put your ‘Eye To The Telescope’ for much longer, KT Tunstall will be in your face over the next weeks and months.
