What do you get if you add five keyboards, an Apple Mac, and a balding conductor? Keyboard Choir of course. Hailing from Oxford, this six-piece do not follow conventions, using just their trusty keyboards to create a racket that can only be described as classical music of the future. At times uncomfortable, but brave indeed.
But what of this weird and wonderful school of keyboards? Well, it is not such a bizzare concept as you might imagine. Multilayered synths mimic DJ Shadow's instrumentals, but it is when they let loose that some great Radiohead 'Kid A' comparisons arise.
Taking half the set to reach these heights is frustrating, however. And up to this point the most cohesive thing on stage is the captivating eccentricities of the ‘conductor’ and main-man mac operator. Interesting to watch, but repetitive to hear. 'Bugs' hints at clever War of the World's proportions but never quite gets there.
Recent support slots with Metronomy and Cut Copy and Truck festival regulars suggest they are not just a flash in the pan, but live performances lack sparkle that guitarists and vocalists can offer. That’s not to say Keyboard Choir do not have their moments. It’s just there are times when they would be more fitting at a David Lynch dinner party, special guests, John Malkovich and Anjelica Huston, than on London’s live stage.
