Thursday 10/02/05 Death From Above 1979 @ The Garage, London

There may be less hair and more head band wearing, but don’t let the questionable attire sway you. DFA 1979 still bring the noise with their drum(s) n bass onslaught with Sebastien Grainger, howling drummer extraordinaire and Jesse F. Keeler conveyor of smut fuelled bass lines proving it is possible for two men to make this much noise.

Energetic and explosive, they don’t hang around launching into a blaze of effect laden bass and driving drums with furious immediacy.  Keeler’s admission to "being ****ed" probably explains the chaotic time signatures and breakneck speed of the majority of the set, but we didn’t come here for anything clean cut.  Grainger With onstage alcohol levels almost as high as those of audience expectation, at times its more tinnitus inducing than premature deafness prescribed.

Perhaps it was a result of the duos obvious drunken state or the fact that the dial didn’t have a 12 setting, but for the majority of the set, sure it’s loud and intense but it doesn’t quite swallow you whole.  Still, when singles ‘Romantic Rights’ and ‘Blood on our hands’ burst into primal life, it’s been ignited and the faint hearted scramble to huddle with self control and share it’s ear plugs.

Whether you go to dance or to be destroyed, you’ll feel violated… and you’ll love it.
