It's a cold, windy night and a Glaswegian communist funk revolutionary otherwise known as El Presidente wants you to join his disco coup. Looking like the bastard son of Che Guevara and Alex Kapranos, he struts his funky stuff while his band play gamely along behind him.
A sparse crowd (this is only the band's second gig) watch and listen as the he tries to win them over. The songs are joyful to say the least, a mixture of the disco-funk of Scissor Sisters and the unrepentant optimism of The Polyphonic Spree, but with a little bit of rock. It's sure to get all those little indie queens out there jumping up and down.
First single and closing number ‘Rocket’ is the most instantly likeable of their songs with a sing-along chorus and rousing guitars. There are other strong songs but tonight the band show potential rather than definite quality. Look out for a moustachioed Glaswegian invasion in 2005!
Support band Stagger Lee are a mix of moody Doves-esque melodies and tortured lyrics. Their set goes down well, and they also look like a promising bet for the future.
