Electronica funk distortion versus hyperactive dance infusions, Metronomy have been garnering attention for all the right reasons. Drummer Joseph Mount is the mastermind behind the outfit, with remixes for everyone from The Klaxons to Roots Manuva under his belt. Mesmerising and commanding, a glorious hybrid of precision dance and indie guitar plucking, they can’t fail to stoke the glowstick laden crowd up into a frenzy. By the time Justice arrive, the crowd are already too hyperactive. Parisian Justice’s set is peppered with coloured crosses and other such imagery, while their tracks of the precision of a Xerox. While ‘We Are Your Friends’ is a crowd pleaser, the outfit prove them selves to reach far beyond that. Echoing LCD soundsystem, between them and Metronomy, you can see just how exciting the electro indie scene is right now.
Dance music can be difficult to watch in a theatre atmosphere, particularly when a zitty underaged bouncer is telling you to sit down despite the fact 300 people to the right of you are standing up. However CSS put so much effort into their show that there is no doubt in their passion. The nu-disco queen herself Lovefoxxx is barking mad, and its always best to dance for mad people. The show is opened by a flurry of snow from the rafters and some giant Christmas presents who dance onto the stage. They quickly explode amongst the snow and cheering to reveal the band, bouncing to the lighting nuances (the lighting is terrific for CSS by the way).
Lovefoxx is wearing a lush green spangled all in one and skips across the stage amidst disco balls and hovering searchlights and has everyone waving their hands to Nintendo bleeps. A Christmas tree teaches us a nice little dance (although it may be a rather drunk tree). Elements that identify with New Young Pony Club and Les Savy Fav are much bouncier, and if there’s any chance of getting a little bored of any repetitiveness, then it doesn’t matter since there are so many colourful things going on in the meantime. 'Meeting Paris Hilton' means you have to get up and bounce and grind. Halfway through 'Music Is My Hot Hot Sex', Lovefoxxx loses the green all in one to a red all in one, with strategically placed handprints on her bum and boobs. She then launched into 'Art Bitch's grungy guitar strums. 'Off The Hook' sees her rolling around on the floor. “This is unbelievable, this is like a dream, a really good dream.” Well good.
It’s short but sweet and dazzling. Like a spangled rollercoaster that actually ran over you. Blinding boogieing to be had by all.
