London’s 100 Club is famed for its open minded support of live music and has played host to a diverse range of acts over its fifty year history, in the process justifying its reputation as one of Europe’s premiere music venues. Tonight would see no fewer than four bands take to the stage further cementing the clubs iconic status.
First up is London quartet Bo Pepper and their blend of of indie rock with a twist. Unfortunately the venue is dissapointingly empty but that doesn’t stop the band from getting straight down to business and it pays off. With a confidence that cant be taught, the songs come thick and fast and as the crowd slowly grows so does their appreciation. ‘Buses’, ‘Blink And You’ll Miss It’ and ‘Good Cop Bad Cop’ are among their best and serve to prove that this is a band with a catalogue of good songs and plenty of potential.
Next to grace this well trodden stage as part of a marathon UK tour are Reading’s unassuming and ecclectic five piece, Pete And The Pirates. Wearing a white skull and cross bones T-Shirt, lead vocalist Tommy Sanders’ style is the perfect compliment to the bands mix of whimsical and whistful indie-pop…adequate but ever so slightly annoying. Their performance is well practised and extremely tight, almost too tight and it doesn’t work in their favour, coming across as nothing more than a clinically insular and executed exhibition. The crowd might have grown, but with a distinct lack of passion and audience interaction, so has the level of idle chit chat and background noise, which takes away from songs such as ‘Come On Feet’ and ‘Knots’. Unfortunately for Pete And The Pirates, there is no treasure map tonight and X doesn’t mark the spot, in fact you’d do just as well to stay at home with a bottle of rum and listen to their CD.
