Wedneday 27/06/07 Chromeo @ Bush Hall, London

July 04, 2007 by Laura Babbili

It’s a typical rainy London evening when Gigwise are standing outside Bush Hall amongst a massive queue of Chromeo fans.  You’d think showing up 15 minutes before the doors open would put you first in the queue in such weather, but no, these kids are willing to brave the downpour and wait in line.  Finally the doors open, the wet clothes come off, and boy are we ready to dance.

After bustin’ some moves through sets from the opening acts and waiting around while our heart rates take their normal speed, Dave 1 and P-Thugg take their places, being met with an ecstatic audience.  The Canadian-via-NYC boys are met with the response they want and are ready to rock.  A stage packed with brand new synthesizers, Fender strat guitars, a talk box, and drum machines, they begin churning out their unmistakable funky electro sound.

“It is SO great to be back in London.” shouts Dave 1 as the music begins.  A phrase that often sounds generic, it’s obvious the singer/programmer/guitarist actually means it as he strums his guitar and dives into the first tune, swinging his hips and hands around.  Dancing on the stage next to each other, it’ clear that although they’re polar opposites in many ways, they interconnect with each other to an almost uncanny level.

Of course, at first the Chromeo boys give us what we want to hear in the form of hits like ‘Needy Girl’ from their debut album, but they also are ready to let us hear for the first time their new album, ‘Fancy Footwork’, which they play tracks from flawlessly and excitedly. Glancing around the room, the audience has completely lost itself. Although having already danced for an hour, bodies are moving, sweat is pouring, and what’s this, a few glowsticks? Party.

What’s great about this new album is that it still has Chromeo’s trademark electro-pop glossiness sound we love, but it’s tighter and cleaner, and a bit cheekier, which draws the audience in with smiles stretched across our sweaty faces. ‘Momma’s Boy’ turns out to be a crowd favourite, its catchy riffs and honest lyrics Dave sings about wanting a girl who’s just like his mum.  Playing a few final tracks like humorous tune ‘My Girl is Calling Me (A Liar)’ get the crowd amused and leave Gigwise tapping our feet and humming the catchy melody on our way out the door at the end of the gig. A truly ace night.
