With perhaps the majority of the youth opting to stay in for the evening to watch that TV show with THAT Gossip song in its trailer, it seems like the crowd here is made from the extras of the show, all dolled up to the nines. Nevertheless, kicking off the party is the Answering Machine. Think art school shy pretty boy vocalist, token girl bassist and a chav-ing it large guitarist – but facades aside, the cutesy trio steal a bit of Bloc Party ‘Helicopter’ and a bit of Strokes guitar-ness to make a kitsch mix. With a drum machine providing their beats, they sound a little like up and coming Clarky Cat.
Next up are the unpronounceable Danananananakroyd – try saying that when you’re sober. Their name barely fits on the bill, they can barely all fit on the stage and their sound no longer fits into the category of music. Despite all of this, they’re a popular bunch with the Barfly reaching jam-packed, granted probably full of all their mates as they’re on home soil. They’re heavy, raucus and full of scrappiness - and it’s something that you won’t see or hear around in these parts for a while.
Having been around for what seems like an age, it’s a shame that Good Shoes aren’t huge starlets yet. With a massive clique of quirkiness and a bunch of ‘straight-from-the-streets’ performers being pumped out of the capital, its difficult to say whether their ‘London look’ and feel will translate to Scotland. Their shy and humble person’s can easily be shat on by the Scot’s gift of being cocky and lairy. Or maybe they’re slightly scared by the teeny boppers at the front in their over priced Topshop bollocks. Who knows, but Good Shoes still manage to whip up a miniature storm, playing firm favourite 'Blue Eyes' along with the dance-around-in-a-Cotton-Eyed-Joe styley 'All In My Head' and the clap-your-hands-as-fast-as-you-can 'We Are Not The Same'. They also air the lesser known free track 'Ice Age' which has hints of their usual folkie-fast guitars and hectic drums just genetically modified with some Futureheads vocal approach.
As the set draws to a close, some rogue scally takes it upon himself to stir the rather stagnant crowd up a bit by quickly nipping on stage to plant a passionate kiss on lead Rhys’s lips. Jealous, us? Jamais.
