As the rain fell, the Liverpool lads and lasses quick footed their way to Mountford Hall to give a rapturous welcome to the charming four that are The Magic Numbers. The near capacity crowd’s applause on this, the band’s opening night of their tour, was loud enough to lift the roof. Thankfully, The Magic Numbers didn’t disappoint, immediately striking rapport with the uplifting vibe and harmonies of their quality tunes.
As they effortlessly gave forth the brilliance of ‘I See You, You See Me,’ ‘Which Way to Happy,’ ‘Love Me Like You’ and ‘Mornings Eleven,’ from their double platinum debut album, the glitter ball spun its sparkling light creating a beguiling scene. Romeo appeared larger than life and stood in rock solid, settled confidence as Michele rocked her way forward to take rightful front stage bassist role; here she smouldered and oozed a cavorting and playful sexiness as she shook her head in uber rock chick fashion, her hair streaming in rhythm to adroit finger patterns. Angela seduced with her percussion and keys and took lead for her sweet singing on ‘Undecided.’ Sean’s precision drumming brought the rock quartet together.
New favourites from second album Those The Brokes, ‘Take a Chance,’ ‘You Never Had It,’ and ‘Take Me or Leave Me’ further wowed the sweaty, (and in places) ‘magic number clones’ throng. The atmosphere breathed passion and liquid honey gusto. Amongst the endless qualities of these gifted four is their greatest asset; their sheer niceness. When they sing and perform, they smile at you and it strikes a warm resonance. They really mean it; they are giving you a bit of who they are through their song. Its effect is magic.
