Sunday 05/11/06 Peter and the Wolf @ Korova, Liverpool

For just a few seconds as the rather minute crowd anticipate the arrival of Liverpool’s newest trio, it’s hard to believe we’re standing within the deep underground space of Korova. What with a tambourine sitting underneath the lead singer’s right foot, mirrored walls located either side of the stage and a double bass that takes up half the stage, it’s quite peculiar if anything. But after just under an hour’s worth of acoustic bliss, we’ve figured out that’s just typical of Peter and the Wolf.

Signed, sealed and set for delivery under Guy Garvey’s record label, the Wolf’ have certainly got something special to offer. Crowd favourite ‘Tommy’ sets off with some Badly Drawn Boy-esque guitar picking, plus the packing on top of with a catchy bass-line, that’s double bass-line, it makes for one rather cute little number.

More of the same but with slight melodic/vocal differences work their way through the set, with newbie ‘This Time’ standing out. The track can only be described as a future single that could propel them into a mainstream filled with welcome hearts and hugs. What we didn’t expect though was ‘Doo What’, which could have been featured on the soundtrack to Grease.  With such boldness and bravery to chuck that into the set, it’s this kind of courage that could take Peter and the Wolf to very far places. Metaphorically.
