Yes, its that time of year again ..... the Triptych festival. Now in its sixth year, the beautifully abstract festival thats boasts a multitude of fresh meat and the odd mature cheese such as tonights main attraction, Coldcut.

They kick off with a pulsating start, bass thundering through the masses, which entices the tentitive crowd onto the giant abyss of a dancefloor. Mesmorised by the visuals on the giant backing screen which are jammed and scratched flawlessly with the sound, you see a fuzzy felt rabbit playing what seems like a bottle for a guitar. Think Mighty Boosh - minus the jazz. The pace is picked up with some devine drum n bass tripping into some classique rock, 'Back In Black' by AC/DC is given a revamp while Coldcut slyly promote their awfully political messages on the visuals, like a political broadcast on shrooms, Tony Blair and the twice as nice John Prescott make an appearance - who'd of thunk it!

MC Juice Aleem comperes the night, introducing vocalists such as Robert Owens - nice embarassing uncle dancing/freedom of expression, you decide, which then rolls into some funky house dribble which simmers down the pace and the dancing kind of grinds to a halt. Coldcut's veteran status is reflected in the crowd judging by the audience tonight, who are suffering from creaky joints and osteoprosis - so they're probably thankful for the change in pace. Proving that Coldcut aren't trying to ride the old skool wave, or be cool for the kids nu skool styley, they finish off with their Roots Manuva hit 'True Skool' to remind some of the fresh faces out there that they're music and messages aren't cold, they're just a little lukewarm for the time being.

    • Good review but I was there too and the crowd was not old skool at all. Coldcut have brought with them a group of followers from let us play 1997 album, not to mention their revolutionary audio/visual work with VJamm3 and the whole of the ninjatune record label. Coldcut play at a wide range of venues and festivals and I think you will find that wherever you see them, its pumping. Listen to that exact set here and make up your own opinion: www.triptychfestival.com/main.html (go to live sets) :)
