“BAMMJESUSHCHRISTNNRRRGGDRRRRR....Tt.tt.tt.t...tt.t.t.tt.” and it begins.
This is the soundtrack to our impending nuclear holocaust. Promoting their new album, and their environmentally unfriendly touring antics, four conquistadors from the hills of Sheffield, 65daysofstatic, are currently ingratiating all those who will listen with a bout of tinnitus and the knowledge that there are still bands out there who will make you green with jealousy that you didn’t come up with those ideas first.
They take clicky, warped drum and bass style samples and put loud bits akin to sending a few guitars and a drum kit down a flight of stairs in a washing machine while the neighbours bass resonates through the walls. The quiet bits are few and far between, or just pretty loud; gentle piano is balanced against reverberant bass, punctuated with implausibly fast drumming such as This Cat Is A Landmine, or complex build-ups to the POW! proper loud. This is also their first tour with specialised visuals from the brilliant Media Lounge who've put some pretty honest but paranoia inducing films up, and have got the feel of the band perfectly.
It’s quite gratifying to see a band you love slowly amassing larger and larger crowds each tour, as they take the time to explain to us, they have no financial backing and can just about afford their no-frills, tour-heavy lifestyle, they’re a cut above the stylised haircuts and have negated the need for contrived observational lyrics by not having any. A blast of fresh noise well needed as well is a good indicator of a healthy music scene.
