It’s always good to see a local band drawing in the big crowds. The Dead 60s must have been feeling pretty proud after having sold out for their tonight’s show. The academy was packed full of people waiting excitedly for the 60’s to come on. The lights went down and everyone around the bar seemed to instantly forget that they needed or wanted to buy a drink. Air raid sirens filled the building, which built up a great bit of tension for the band to come on to. The lights went up and they burst into ‘A Different Age’ with full force. The aggressive bass line really got the crowd jumping. The youth of the band really shines through their music and seems to enthuse everyone in the crowd.
These guys however know how to write chilled grooves too. They slowed down the tempo with tracks such as ‘We Get Low’, which is oozing with Reggae vibes. Lyrics such as "I don’t need this" in ‘Control This’ reflect the defiant nature of the album in general. As far as performance goes The Dead 60’s didn’t seem to reacting to the crowd much - weird considering they were in their hometown. The crowd seemed to be expecting more but to give credit to them the 60’s thanked everyone greatly for coming down. After all they're musicians not showmen.
Better things came later on with ‘Riot On The Radio’, which didn't quite provoke a riot, but brought the house down at least. The song is so full of energy and you could tell they really enjoyed every minute of playing it. Unfortunately things were kept short and sweet as The Dead 60’s only have an album worth of tracks to their name so far. Let's just hope they can keep this Reggae/ Ska feel fresh an interesting for their next album.
