God, it had to happen didn’t it? After the resurgence of bands titled “The”, some clever fool had to make it their own by adding another ‘e.’ Thee. We’re still in the cockney phase of rock ‘n’ roll theatrical mugging. We’re not ready for the northern version yet.
What this new and ker-azee spelling means is that it’s quite easy to get tedious, half-asleep Thee Unstrung confused with the sparkily excellent Thee Comrades. If you did so on Saturday night, then more fool you, because after the half-hour of total boredom they inflicted on Barfly on Saturday, they should be strung back up again.
There’s a massive crowd gathered to watch the band, so the singer’s apologies for being somewhat lacklustre don’t wash at all: “We’ve been on tour”. They lurk forlornly onstage as if the only thing stopping them from running off is the thought of what their mothers will do to them. A bloke with seven inches of unnecessary fringe and round shades smokes at the side of the stage. He’s about seven minutes more interesting than the band.
