What is up with these guys? Didn’t your mother ever tell you that gimmicks only work once? Fresh off of their 250,000 selling success ‘Greatest Hits’ the GLC boys deemed it time to unleash another comical project, musically it leaves a lot to be desired, but is guaranteed to cause a couple of chuckles, even if it has no substantial lasting power.Mischief is the name of the game, and the album’s opening cut ‘Your Missus Is A Nutter’ does nothing to deter this factor. GLC’s ridiculous attempt to talk about their girlfriends like MC’s in the US rap world do (about their bitches) falls flat on its face. OK, so these guys do have comic value and it’s pretty obvious this is all they wanna be known for, with that said ‘R ‘N’ B’ is by far the funniest record contained on this thirteen track project, with the heartfelt lyrics "Your love is a bullet, my love is the gun".
‘Charmschool’ samples the Grange Hill theme tune which might appeal to those who are old enough to remember the original hit TV show, but other listeners won’t be impressed with what the Newport eight man crew have to say. Admittedly, ‘Monkey Love’ will probably have you in mini fits of unnoticeable (due to its mellow execution) hysterics as will the ode to Claims Direct, ‘Bad Boy Limp’ which contains the lyrics, "Cash or cheque? Trip or fall? You get over a grand if you rip off your balls." It almost acts as a musical manual on how to make an accident compensation claim.
GLC have something that worked once before and are now trying to relive that same success. Whether this new album is 'Safe As ****' will depend on whether the nation is still in the mood to laugh at chav jokes.
