Recorded in a farmhouse in western Massachusetts, Erin Mckeown's 'Distillation' feels so wholesome that you'd swear regular listening could improve your health. Up close and utterly personal one minute, stomping her feet with the boys in the band the next, the 24 year-old singer flits effortlessly from folksy roots to jazz could-be-classics in a manner that suggests she put more than her fair share of hours in strumming on the porch. But it's not just an album for old timers. McKeown's dynamic guitar playing may be unmistakably trad but it's hitched to the voice of a modern young woman, sexy and edgy, a bit of a bad girl too, we hope. A worthy contender for anyone considering a ramble off the beaten track.
