Christened after a mythical South American pickpocket training academy, once again School of Seven Bells will be hoping to skilfully steal a few mores hearts with their second offering. The follow-up to 2008 debut 'Alpinisms' is stuffed full of the dreamy, blissed out pop, which stunned fans of founder Benjamin Curtis’ other band, alt-prog rockers Secret Machines, first time around.
Kicking off with 'Windstorm', which has been receiving patronage on 6 Music for a couple of months now, it’s a sublime opener – beautifully meshing identical twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza’ choral vocals with musical flourishes and orchestral chimes.
And while there are a clutch of lovely moments scattered elsewhere on the record, you can’t help feeling the trio played their trump card too early. 'Heart Is Strange' and 'Dust Devil' both charm without captivating, while 'Joviann’s' is lovingly crafted but lacks real flair.
Thankfully, things do pick up again towards the end of this 10-track release, with both 'Dial' and 'Bye Bye Bye 'dancing out of the speakers with joyous, summery abandon. All in all, School of Seven Bells’s second record may steal a little of your heart, but it probably won’t infiltrate your soul.
