Jack Johnson is a man not limited in talent – he’s won a couple of awards for directing surf films, this album ‘In Between Dreams’ is his third, and apparently he’s none-too-shabby on a surf board. He already has a platinum record to his name, and lists influences including Radiohead, Neil Young, and A Tribe Called Quest.
Johnson has a voice not totally unlike the Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis, and a style reminiscent of Beck. This is most apparent on the funk-folk of ‘Good People’, whilst his quick delivery of lyrics makes him an engaging listen. ‘Better Together’ is a sweet acoustic ballad that features clever use of a piano, whilst ‘Never Know’ has gorgeous relaxing harmonies over a driving beat. There is also a decent range of moods created, from the soothing tones of ‘No Other Way’ to the rousing lead single ‘Sitting, Waiting, Wishing’.
‘Crying Shame’ is a highlight of the record; epic in sound, and the melodic ‘If I Could’ sees Johnson conveying his sadness. A catchy bass riff holds ‘Staple It Together’, but on the lush ‘Do You Remember’ it is Johnson’s voice and lyrics that steal the show. Reminiscing about his partner, the vivid imagery he conjures up sweeps you away on this potted history of the relationship. Unfortunately in amongst some of these great ballads are forgetful tracks such as ‘Banana Pancakes’ and ‘Situations’. On the whole however, it’s a relaxing chill-out album from a talented musician.
