One Night Only's participation in yet another Pigeon Detectives tour at the end of last year that stretched the length and breadth of the UK was a huge success for the Yorkshire indie quintet, and did nothing but highlight to the albeit slightly inebriated masses how rip roaring their music is even in comparison to their Leeds based neighbours. Classed by many as the next big thing it seems the bands clinically crisp, commercially savvy mix is of huge appeal to the masses.
The bands debut album 'Started A Fire' does just that, opening with 'Just For Tonight', the second single released from the album and adopted by E4's Nearly Famous, fills the air with a charged anthemic quality. Jack Sails on keyboards, a late addition to the bands line up, provides a different slant on the usual indie setup turning a mediocre piece of indie rock balladry into a goose-bump inducing rhythmtic riot. October's debut release 'You & Me' arrives with all the barrow boy charm that made it a smash across the airwaves on it's original outing. Radio friendly melodies and crooning vocals from George Craig, brother to Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong drummer Bummer Jong, sit well against a relentless shower of metallically rich drumming from Sam Ford.
'Time' a far more sedate affair in comparison to many of the tracks on the album gives Sails a chance to shine with an abundance of piano chordage and gently simmering guitar riffs, whilst following track 'Stay At Home' seems to do a complete u-turn with a turn of pace leaving drummer Sam Ford's fore arms burning from a build up of lactic acid due to an over worked high hat.
Some may compare One Night Only to bands like The Kooks, whilst they may have the same dress sense and ease in writing highly melodic punky power pop, the overwhelming difference here thankfully in a less pretentious outlook on life and far more genuine demeanour.
