If you’re one of those curious sorts that always skips past track one to hear another persons take on the single you’ve just bought you’ll already be familiar with the Boys Noize tag, with high profile remixes for the Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’, ‘Feist’s ‘My Moon My Man’, Bloc Party’s ‘Banquet’ and most recently Marilyn Manson’s ‘Putting Holes In Happiness’ clogging his hard drive, he’s become much in demand.
Germany’s own Boys Noize (or Alexander Ridha to his mum) started his early musical path as a self taught drummer and pianist, but whilst most 16 year olds are concentrating on smoking and dressing up to deceive bouncers or bar staff Ridha was learning the finer points of programming and producing, with this debut collection proof positive that his efforts weren’t wasted.
Each of the twelve tracks here is charged, taut, and dancefloor stirring stuff, whilst uniformly electro infused techno funk, Ridha’s analogue production skills are something to behold and a lesson to all digital dummies the width and breadth of club land.
As with most danceable collections it makes more sense surrounded by hundreds of sweaty revellers, and lights flashing whilst in the throes of sound waves than sat in a dimly lit room hunched over a laptop, and with the lack of variety amongst the tracks (and with this copy containing a repetitive anti-piracy mantra throughout) it’s a battle to give the album its deserved concentrate for the full hour.
But numbers such as ‘Let’s Buy Happiness’, ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’ and recent single ‘& Down’ are unlikely to be equalled for charged and deranged beats during the remainder of this year, making ‘Oi Oi Oi’ an undoubted triumph.
