The Polyphonic Spree’s second album 'Together We’re Heavy', follows on directly from their debut, both in the way that the track numbers refer to sections with song titles in brackets and that the musical content is developed across the ten tracks and not specifically as individual pieces.
The opening track 'A Long Day Continues / We Sound Amazed' has the familiar Spree vibe moving seamlessly into the second "section", the first single to be taken from the album - 'Hold Me Now'. This will no doubt have future festival goers swaying and bobbing like there’s no tomorrow. In an age of stress this song melts away the tension and has you reaching for the oversized coloured t-shirts and incense.
Unfortunately this is the highlight of the album. The middle of the album seems to lose some momentum and dare I say it, gets a little boring. In reality there is only so much “Holding on sunshine, Keep the light on in your soul” that a person can take in one sitting. Though by the seventh track 'Suitcase Calling' the pace is picked up a little, offering something a bit more than just repetitive melody chanting. It takes a little time to get going, but this is OK as the track is nearly nine minuets long in all.
The concluding title section 'Together We’re Heavy' is a little disappointing as a finale, and leaves you without any vivid feeling. Despite that, this is an album to be recommend even if it’s one of those that only gets brought out when there's an emergency need to embrace your inner hippy.
