Being the U.K. RnB torch bearer is a difficult job, which is exactly why 25-year-old Jamelia is the one currently sitting in the role. She’s got the confidence of an artist who’s been in the game for more than a decade, the maturity of a delicious cheddar, and most of all she’s brimming with star quality.
Her latest offering, 'Walk With Me' is, like the intro to the Extended Version of Eric B. & Rakim’s classic cut 'Paid In Full' states, a journey through sound. With cleverly used samples pushing the album up a gear from it’s introductory ‘ok’ first single, 'Something About You', track’s like 'No More' (which samples The Stranglers’ 'Golden Brown') turn Jamelia’s usually ‘U.K. tagged’ sound in to a more internationally appealing one.
At one point on the 12-track LP, we bare witness to a very pissed off Jamelia, which isn’t something we’re used to. Complete with cuss words, “Get Up, Get Out” hears the mother of two build up enough courage to tell her partner to leave her life for good (which might be based on true events). It’s exciting stuff to hear. The passion she experiences really turns the track in to a worthy (for all badly treated females) ‘I hate men’ anthem.
Other joints not to be missed include the Kool & The Gang-sampled 'Ain’t A Love' and Depeche Mode-sampled 'Beware Of The Dog'. 'Walk With Me' is a well-produced and effectively-executed RnB project. Please be upstanding for the wonderful return of Jamelia.
