Juliet Lewis may have the secret to eternal youth. She never seems to age in her films. Push away thoughts that she got paid to kiss Johnny Depp too. The Licks support her with vim and vigour and certainly know their way around a tune. On paper Juliet and The Licks seem almost too good to be true.
Juliet continues to be a foxy charismatic woman far removed from the musical offerings of her fellow thespians. Now, while ‘Four On The Floor’ is a world apart from Paul off Neighbours a.k.a Stefan Dennis ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’ it does leave a lot to be desired.
Lewis, when she bothers to depart from the half talking half guttural Patti Smith impression she sounds like a below par Shirley Manson/Suzi Quatro. She’s full of boundless energy and enthusiasm and you get the impression she’s a minx in the bedroom. But it seems that Lewis is yet to truly find her own voice. This album is definitely musically more diverse than the bands debut offering and will we're sure act as the soundtrack to many a young rock chick’s drunken fumblings but something about it just doesn’t ring true. She appears to lack authenticity of her peers regardless of how good the material is.
From the ‘Brown Sugar’ old skool honky tonk rock tinged ‘Get Up’ to punky shortness of ‘Killer’ this is far from a one woman show. Try and get past Lewis and hear the music and you may find something worth a further listen. But be warned you'll have to delve very deep to find it.
