What can be said about the marvellous Freddie that has not been said many times before, discussed and digested a million times over in forums and pub quizzes and tributes and music shops? At least three things. One: He had double jointed elbows, Two: He probably made too many songs (oo that’s controversial!) and Three: This album of solo songs and tracks and previously unreleased material is abso-soddin-lutely wonderful!

It is strange that there actually exists previously unheard tunes out there when so many Queen and Freddie cds and bits have been sold over the years, but some researchers must have been extremely diligent in compiling, as, yes, certain songs really are rarities. Mind you, there was that Queen video made after he died where he still managed to sing with the band thanks to the miracle of CG…

Anyway, as every upright person who has been near any kind of popular culture knows what Mr. Mercury sounds like (as well they should!), a list of recommended tracks: ‘Barcelona’, featuring the lovely tones of Montserrat Caballe, done at the time of a certain Olympics, cant remember which one… ‘The Great Pretender’, because its great. ‘Mr Bad Guy’ (bad circulation version), which is the same tune as the other Mr Bad Guy on the collection but strangely more compelling. The a cappella version of ‘Let’s Turn it On’ is frankly stunning if every voice on it is Freddie, as the man manages to sing in harmony with himself, which not even Cher managed. Which is probably a good thing. And finally, ‘I Can Hear Music’ which is a Beach Boys tune, but charming Freddie did a cover when he was young under the unlikely pseudonym Larry Lurex. Oh dear, oh dear. EMI are also releasing the DVD and there is a book to go with this release, so go get them!
