At her purest, New Yorks Joan Wasser needs nothing but the tribal beat of her index finger, a drumstick, a guitar string, or the base of her right heel as accompaniment. A vocal talent to be reckoned with, she has been described as being vocally reminiscent of Deborah Harry singing Nina Simone.
Famous for working with Anthony and the Jonsons and Rufus Wainwright, Wasser has changed bands as often as she changes key, appearing in The Dambuilders, Those Bastard Souls, Mind Science Of The Mind and Black Beetle (which she created with Jeff Buckley's band).
She's also recorded with or played alongside a long list of high profile musicians including Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Dave Gahan, Elton John, Sheryl Crow and the Scissor Sisters.
In Joan As Police Woman, Wasser finally finds time to indulges in a solo project, with only the dynamic arrangements of Rainy Orteca on bass and Ben Perowsky on drums to keep her company. On 'Real Life', she dons her cutesy heels, and effortlessly dances through shards of jazz, punk, and even some R&B.
If her work so far is anything to go by, we should expect much more from Wasser in the future. You have been warned.
