Similar in style to the rewarding 'Inner City Sumo - Songs From The Mersey Delta' compilation, 'Power Overload' from the High Voltage label is a compilation of songs from bands within the Manchester gigging scene.
Including 20 songs from some well-known bands and others who are less so, the tracks here cut across all genres, from incendiary guitar riffage to alt-country to the kind of 1980s electro that is currently proving so successful for the likes of The Bravery and Goldfrapp.
Highlights include 'Frustration', by New Order soundalikes The Whip, Liam Frost's folk-tinged 'I Woke Up', 'Poisonous Emblem' by The KBC - who sound a bit like The Rapture - and 'Learn To Love The System' by Omerta, which reminds you of The Mars Volta or System Of A Down in its grand pretentions.
Essentally an overview of all guitar music produced in the third city at the moment, 'Power Overload' is certainly a bit hit and miss, but there is enough here to keep all but the most trad music fan interested.
