Glastonbury Named Best Festival 2011: A History Of The World's Greatest Music Festival

Gigwise looks back at the historic festival...

  • 2008 became the most-talked about Glastonbury ever when it was announced that Jay-Z would headline. It provoked a massive backlash, most notably from Noel Gallagher who was mocked by the rapper during his eventual triumphant show. The other less notorious headline slots came from Kings of Leon and The Verve. Ticket sales were slower than usual, not selling out until the eve of the festival, causing Michael Eavis much worry and the prospect of having a £5million deficit. A new Shangri-La area replaced Lost Vagueness.

November 11 2011 – Summer may well and truly be over but at Tuesday night's Festival Awards Glastonbury came out top yet again.

Festival organizers threw aside their wellies to grace the stage and congratulate each other on what has been perhaps the most jam packed year in recent memory.

Glastonbury took the top award of "Best Major Festival", whilst newcomers Outlook took the much lusted after "Best Overseas Festival".

To celebrate Glastonbury in all it's glory, Gigwise has put together a countdown of the festivals history and highlights.

You can see the countdown on Gigwise below – shame we have to wait another year!
