Having created the company Motown in 1959 - a moniker derived from Detroit's nickname Motor Town - on January 16, 1961 Gordy established it as an independent company. It absorbed some of Tamla Records and Anna Records (a label his sister Gwen set up) which now served as subsidiaries to the main label.
