A close friend of Gordy's, The Miracles' lead singer Smokey Robinson was promoted to vice president of the company shortly after its set-up. As a mark of respect to his friend, in the sixties Robinson named two of his children 'Berry' and 'Tamla'. The label was very much a family affair with his father, two brothers and sister holding important roles.
