50 Years Ago: Billie Holiday dies of cirrhosis of the liver at the Metropolitan Hospital in New York on July 17, 1959. The 44-year-old singer was also suffering from heart disease after becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol in her later years. While she was on her death bed, she was arrested for drug possession by police who formed a guard outside her room. Despite the troubles at the end of her life, her musical legacy still remains intact.
