40 Years Ago: David Bowie breaks to the fore with his single Space Oddity which is released on July 11, 1969. A song about a fictional astronaut called Major Tom who becomes depressed during a mission to space, it perfectly coincided with the Apollo 11 moon landing on the week of its release. The BBC even used the song during their coverage of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins' mission.
