A 2ft long box containing John Peel’s favourite 7 inch singles are set to be the subject of a Channel 4 documentary.
The legendary BBC DJ who died a year while holidaying in Peru was the owner of an extensive record collection which is thought to have numbered around 100,000 items. The documentary will focus on a battered metal box containing Peel’s 142 favourite 7 inch singles and will feature interviews with his family and band members.
Not surprisingly there are several odd inclusions in the box, most notably by comedian and bird worrier Bill Oddie who recorded a Joe Cocker-esque version of ‘Ilkley Moor Baht 'At’. Sheena Easton also has two inclusions while dad-rockers Status Quo’s ‘Down Down’ was also lovingly spun by Peel.
Less weird additions are a three track single by The Beatles a bit of Marc Bolan and an impressive ten White Stripes singles.
Channel 4 broadcast John Peel’s Record Box on 14th November as part of its UK Music Hall Of Fame series.
