Latitude Festival has revealed its official theme for 2015 ahead of next week’s line-up announcement - For Richer, For Poorer, For Better, For Worse.
Latitude’s approach to theme is a little more intellectual than Bestival - whose extremely popular annual theme is intended mainly as an excuse for communal fancy dress. For their 10th anniversary edition, Latitude have stepped things up another notch.
Last year, the festival's theme was Secrets and Lies, but this year’s takes its cue from the traditional marriage vows. As Latitude’s media partner the New Statesmen reports, the literature and arts programming “will explore how individuals and communities conduct our public, private, personal and – especially pertinent after May’s election – political relationships.”
Tania Harris, the festival’s arts programmer, said: "Whether it’s clicking ‘yes’ to Google’s terms of service, saying ‘I do’ in a marriage ceremony, or putting an X in a political party’s box at the general election, the agreements we make affect the lives of everyone around us.
"Yet at the same time, there’s a tension between the world in which we’re told we’re ‘all in this together’ and our society itself, with its growing extremes of rich and poor, social media oversharing and increasingly secretive state security agencies.”
We’re fairly sure it’s going to be a lot less dry than that statement.
As for the music - the first batch of acts for the Suffolk festival will be announced on 3 March. Festival boss Melvin Benn has said that the headliners are someone who's headlined before, someone who's risen through the ranks, and someone they've been trying to get for years. Rumours include PJ Harvey, Alt-J, Bjork, New Order, Paolo Nutini, Nick Cave and Portishead.
