Stellastarr* - 'Harmonies For The Haunted' (RCA) Released 13/09/05 (Import)

Despite being tipped for big things when they released their debut record two years ago, New York’s Stellastarr* barely broke into the mainstream media, instead building their solid fan base through a tough touring schedule.  Due to record label politics, ‘Harmonies For The Haunted’ is unlikely to see a release outside of America anytime this year – so Gigwise will just have to wet your appetite in the meantime.

Beginning with a solemn piano line, ‘Lost In Time’ is a sad, atmospheric ballad of the grandest scale.  Shawn Christensen’s unique powerful voice is still apparent, as are bassist Amanda Tannen’s swooning backing vocals, and they combine to beautiful effect.  ‘Damn This Foolish Heart’ is upbeat and poppy, and allows guitarist Michael Jurin to add his own distinctive singing, while ‘The Diver’ showcases the great musicianship of the band.  Featuring a riff that Franz would kill for, ‘Sweet Troubled Soul’ and ‘Born In A Flea Market’ are much more direct, rockier tracks that will imbed themselves in your skull.

Slowing the pace down again, diehard fans may recognise ‘On My Own’ from the band’s live shows.  Drummer Arthur Kramer takes centre stage on this brooding effort, while Jurin’s guitar slowly introduces itself, as the track develops into a glorious and stunning soundscape.  ‘Love And Longing’ is similar lyrically; dealing with loss, but musically is the antithesis.  Synthesisers help to create an upbeat sound along with a great guitar melody, and the chorus implores you to sing along.  It’s another awesome track on an album full of highlights; an album that demonstrates Stellastarr* are a hugely talented group.
