New York shoegazers Asobi Seksu have announced that they've split up - much to the devastation of their fans.

The dream-pop cult heroes released their debut self-titled album in 2004, before going on to release three further records to huge critical acclaim. Now, the band have decided to call it a day.

"Thanks for all the memories guys," they wrote on their official Facebook page." Hope to make more down the line. We miss you all."

They later added: "Truly thankful for all of you and for 11 amazing years. Some of you say that we got you through tough times or that we soundtracked some special moments...You have no idea what that means to us. We love Asobi too. We will miss it too. Xoxo"

Fans have since left emotional messages of disappointment for the band, with Yago Galleta writing: "This can't be true! Sorry, I'm too sad to understand anything right now."

Hannah McLean added: "Been listening to you for a while, but just realised recently you are one of my favorite bands. I'm sad, hope to hear from you guys in the future!"

Asobi Seksu released their final album Fluorescence in 2011.
