Cult Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer has died in a Havana hospital after suffering multiple organ failure on Saturday at the age of 78.

Ferrer is most well known for his work alongside Ry Cooder and a host of other Cuban music stars on the 1997 album ‘Buena Vista Social Club’. The album was such a success that a documentary was made about the artists who took part in its recording.

He was admitted into hospital on Wednesday suffering from gastroenteritis having just returned from a month long tour in Europe.

His manager Daniel Florestan said of him: "He was a very worthy person, to be admired, not only as a musician but also as a father and a husband. He completed his European tour with great bravery. We are deeply affected by his death."
