The Official Charts Company have named Abba’s Greatest Hits collection, Gold, as the best-selling album in the compact disc format, selling half a million more than Adele’s second place album, 21.
To celebrate the CD format's 30th anniversary the British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) have compiled a list of the top selling albums and the 1992 album that has pipped the likes of Adele, Oasis and The Beatles.
Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad formed Abba in 1972 and spent ten years at the top of the pop market before splitting in 1982. With hits like ‘Mamma Mia’, Dancing Queen’ and ‘The Winner Takes It All’ Abba had nine UK No.1s. The 19 track Gold album has sold 4.04 million copies to date in the UK going 13 times platinum in 20 years.
Despite the rise of downloads and file sharing, two thirds of albums are still sold on CDs and with over 28million sales of the album worldwide, it is no surprise the 1974 Eurovision Song contest winners greatest hits collection tops the list.
