Iconic singer/songwriter Randy Newman has recorded a track mocking the perceived racism among American voters in the current US presidential battle. Listen to the track below.
'I'm Dreaming Of A White President' is a joke track poking fun at Americans who vote for politicians purely on the colour of their skin. Newman has spoken openly of his support for Barack Obama and state that while the track is meant to be taken light-heartedly, that the issues at hand in the US are serious.
“I felt that that sentiment exists in the country,” says Newman, reports US sources. “I don’t know how many people you can get to admit it. I think maybe zero.”
“It’s delicate enough that I’m not going to offend people every which way, but I wanted to get it right as best I could,” he added.
Speaking of his support for Obama, he says: “No European country would have elected a black man. I can’t believe it happened. I think it’s fantastic, like a step on the moon.”
Lyrics in the track include: "He won’t be the brightest, perhaps / but he’ll be the whitest / and I’ll vote for that."
